Causes.

Usually sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is pinched, this can happen for several reasons such as a herniated disk, a bone spur in the lumbar spine. It is unlikely but sciatica can occur from other causes such as diabetes damaging the nerve or a tumor compressing the nerve.

Lumbar Herniated Disk

If a disk within the lumbar becomes herniated it will expand compressing and placing pressure onto the sciatic nerve, therefore causing sciatica.

Bone Spur

Bone spurs can occur with age through natural degenerative changes to the spine over time with use. These problems cause the spine to have reduced space as the bone structure changes, putting pressure on the nerves surrounding the lumbar as the spine expands outward.
