Treatment.

Treating Sciatica.

There are two major distinctions in sciatica treatment; at home care, and care from a physician or physiotherapist. Depending on the severity of the sciatica pain and/or injury both are valid options - it is best to consult your doctor to see what action needs to be taken to aid each individual sciatica.

Home treatment.

  • Cold packs : Using cold packs for about 20 minutes several times a day can ease the inflammation placed on the painful area.
  • Hot packs : Using a hot pack or a heating pad may help to reduce pain. If not try alternating hot and cold.
  • Stretching : Stretches that don't twist or jerk can provide necessary relief and can help to relieve some nerve root compression.
  • Over the counter medication - i.e. ibuprofen
  • Home ultrasound treatment : Home ultrasound like Sonic Relief can be incredibly beneficial for sciatica pain. Sonic Relief operates at 1MHz reaching about 4" into tissue which is perfect for deep tissue pain such as sciatica. Home ultrasound such as Sonic Relief can also save you expensive and time consuming trips to the physiotherapist and allow you to treat your sciatica pain from the comfort of your own home as needed.

Professional treatment.

  • Medication : Prescription medication may be needed to aid the sciatica pain, this may include muscle relaxants, anti inflammatories, and various other drugs.
  • Physical therapy and ultrasound : Physiotherapy is used to begin correcting posture and building strength, a physiotherapist may also administer ultrasound for deep tissue relief.
  • Steroid injections : Steroid injections may be administered to reduce inflammation however the effects are only temporary and the injections have a high risk of causing side effects.
  • Surgery : Surgery is generally not necessary, only in extreme cases of sciatica in which the compressed nerve causes significant reduction of motion, loss of bladder or bowel control, significant weakness, sudden pain, or if the pain doesn't begin to improve over time.
